How I reviewed it

I did not create accounts on Character.AI or on any app below, so nothing here describes using them. I read each company's own pages on November 1, 2026, and applied the checks on our how we reviewpage. Where a company does not publish something, I say so. This guide does not cover ways around Character.AI's filter or its age checks. Its rules apply.

Can you be NSFW on Character AI?

No. Three of Character.AI's own documents say so:

The community guidelines say illegal sexual content, grooming, sexual extortion, "pornographic content, and nudity are prohibited."
The terms of service ban content that is "obscene or pornographic" and content that constitutes sexual harassment.
The guidelines prohibit attempts to manipulate the system, create rule-breaking content or bypass its security and safety systems.

The guidelines say automated moderation and human review enforce this, and that its AI models have "filters and limits" to prevent inappropriate outputs. No Character.AI page I read describes an adult mode or NSFW setting.

What romance Character.AI does allow

Romance is welcome. The guidelines describe storytelling that spans "passionate romance and thrilling adventure" and say fiction can explore dramatic and provocative scenarios. They also ask users to keep sexual content appropriate and say the platform should stay welcoming for everyone.

So a love story is within the rules, and pornographic content and nudity are not. The guidelines do not draw the line in more detail than that.

Will Character AI ever allow NSFW?

Nothing on its own pages points that way. A September 3, 2026 post on its blog says "Safety is a massive priority" and that Character.AI may be "conservative when it comes to moderation."

The open question is ownership. On October 12, 2026, Character.AI said it had started a voluntary Chapter 11 process to sell the company under court supervision. The platform is still running, subscriptions remain active, and the sale should finish by the end of November or early December 2026. If no viable bid arrives, the post says the platform will be wound down. It says nothing about content rules, and no new owner has announced changes.

Character AI age rules and the under-18 chat ban

On October 29, 2025, Character.AI announced it would remove "the ability for users under 18 to engage in open-ended chat with AI" no later than November 25, 2025. Until then, under-18 chat was capped at two hours a day. The post also described an in-house age assurance model used alongside third-party tools such as Persona.

A November 21, 2025 update said removal would begin in the US on November 24. Under-18 users now get reading mode and non-chat features such as Feed, Imagine and Streams.

How Character.AI checks your age

Its help center says every user goes through age assurance:

Character.AI looks at signals such as login info and platform activity.
If those suggest you are 18 or older, you keep full access to chat.
If they suggest you are under 18, you can accept the under-18 experience or verify with a selfie through Persona.
Only if Persona is unsure from the selfie does it ask for a government ID.

Persona keeps IDs for one week and deletes biometric data within seven days, and a c.ai+ subscription does not skip the check. Passing as an adult restores chat, but the content rules above stay the same.

Why Character.AI holds this line

In plain terms, Character.AI chose to be a general entertainment platform for teens and adults alike. Its own pages give three reasons:

It serves a broad audience. The guidelines talk about a "diverse community", and teens still use its non-chat features.
Regulators and parents are watching. The October 2025 post cites questions from regulators about what teens may meet in AI chats, and calls its own steps "more conservative than our peers."
Safety is its stated priority. The September 2026 post says ending under-18 chat "was the right thing to do then and remains so today."

I picked apps whose own guidelines, terms or pricing pages allow adult content, that restrict use to adults, and that publish a price. CrushOn is missing on purpose. Its page title promises no-filter chat, but its guidelines say to avoid depicting explicit sexual activity and do not say plainly that adult text is allowed.

1. SpicyChat: closest to Character.AI's library

If you liked browsing community characters, SpicyChat works the same way. Its guidelines say chatbots with explicit language or imagery must be marked NSFW, so labeled adult chat is allowed. They ban photorealistic pornographic content and non-consensual acts. Users must be 18 or older, and every bot must be an adult.

Its help center says core features stay free of charge. Its pricing FAQ lists Get A Taste at $5.95 a month or $60 a year since September 8, 2026, with higher tiers at $19.95 and $29.95 a month. 2. JanitorAI: the best free swap for text

JanitorAI's guidelines, last updated February 4, 2026, say it "permits adult content between consenting adult characters." They ban incest between blood relatives, age regression and necrophilia, and they ban pornographic images and nudity outright. Characters must be physically and mentally over 18, and users suspected of being under 18 are permanently banned.

The free plan has about 9k context, and its upgrade page says "Free stays free." janitor+ costs $12.99 a month or $99 a year for five times more context, faster replies when busy and more models. If pictures matter, it will not fit.

3. OurDream.ai: chat, images and video on one account

OurDream lets you build or pick a companion, then chat and make images and video of it. Its FAQ allows NSFW images and videos of your companion, says all characters are adults, and bans characters that look underage and lookalikes of real people. Everyone confirms they are 18, with an extra age check where the law requires one, such as in the UK. Its help center lists $19.99 a month with 1,000 dreamcoins at once and 1,000 a month after, or $119.88 a year with 2,000 at once and 1,000 a month. Standard chat costs subscribers nothing, but images cost 10 coins per 2 and standard video 100 coins per 5 seconds, so 1,000 coins covers about 200 images or 50 seconds of video.

The downsides are real. Free users pay 1 coin per message, cannot make images or video, and cannot buy coins, and the free starting balance is not published. Its home page claims end-to-end encryption, while its privacy policy, last modified August 26, 2026, describes encryption in transit and at rest, a weaker promise. Its help center says nothing is refunded once more than 25% of a product is used, monthly plans cannot be refunded once their coins are spent, and crypto payments cannot be refunded. 4. Nomi: one companion that remembers

Nomi is built around a single companion with memory. Its home page says it is "built on freedom of expression" and must remain "unfiltered and uncensored". That permission comes from the home page. Its terms do not mention adult content.

It is free to start with no card. The US App Store, which rates it 18+, lists a Launch Plan at $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year and a Standard Plan at $15.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year. Its terms bar users under 18 and say payments are nonrefundable.

5. Candy.ai: design a companion in detail

Candy's home page promises "uncensored fantasy experiences" that stay fictional, consenting and within its Community Guidelines. Its subscription page lists 18+ images and video, unlimited text and 100 tokens a month. Shown from the UK, it costs £13.99 a month or £47.88 a year, with £9.99 for the first month.

Verdict: Character AI NSFW and the best alternative for adults

Character AI NSFW is not allowed, and nothing on Character.AI's own pages suggests that will change. Its guidelines welcome passionate romance but prohibit pornographic content and nudity for every user, and proving you are 18 only decides whether you can chat at all. Under-18 users lost open-ended chat in late 2025. The company is also being sold under court supervision, and no new owner has announced different rules. If you are an adult who wants adult roleplay, move to an app whose own rules allow it.
