Grok AI Girlfriend in 2026: Ani, Companions and the Rules

Grok AI girlfriend: a phone on a bedside table showing an AI companion chat beside a mug and an open book, 18+

A Grok AI girlfriend means one of xAI's Grok companions, such as Ani, inside the Grok app. xAI's Grok FAQ says companions run on the iOS app only, with no plans for web or Android. xAI does not say which plan includes them, Grok accepts users from 13, and your chats can train its models unless you opt out.

This guide covers what xAI's own pages and the Grok app listings say, then compares Grok with four dedicated AI girlfriend apps for adults.

Grok companions at a glance

This table draws on xAI's own policies, help pages and pricing, plus the Grok listings on the App Store and Google Play, read on November 1, 2026.

How I reviewed it

I did not create a Grok account or chat with Ani. This is desk research. I read xAI's Grok FAQ, terms, consumer FAQ, acceptable use policy, privacy policy and pricing pages, then the Grok app listings, following our review method. xAI mentions companions in one answer in its Grok FAQ, so where its pages are silent, I say so. The launch date comes from one TechCrunch press report, labelled as such.

What are Grok companions?

Grok companions are characters you can talk to inside the Grok app on iPhone. xAI has no dedicated page for them. Its consumer FAQ, dated May 12, 2025, says "You can make Grok your unique and entertaining companion" by choosing personas and a tone.

According to a TechCrunch press report from July 14, 2025, Elon Musk announced that companions were live in the Grok app for SuperGrok subscribers, who paid $30 a month at the time. The report named at least two characters, Ani and Bad Rudy. xAI's own news page carries no companions announcement.

Grok itself is a general AI assistant whose product page lists memory across chats, images and short video through Grok Imagine, and voice conversations. xAI does not say which of these companions use.

Who is Grok Ani?

Ani is one of the Grok companions, described in the TechCrunch press report as an anime-style character. xAI publishes no description of Ani and no rules specific to her. The Grok App Store description does not mention her or companions, and her name appears there only in user reviews, which I did not treat as evidence. Anything you read about what Ani does comes from outside xAI.

Where can you use Grok companions, and what do they cost?

xAI's Grok FAQ is clear on platforms. Companions are on the iOS app only, and xAI has no plans to bring them to the web or Android.

Price is less clear. No xAI page says which plan includes companions. xAI's pricing page lists the current plans, sold as The X Subscription:

  • Free, with limited chat
  • Plus at $8 a month or $80 a year
  • Premium at $30 a month or $300 a year
  • Super at $100 a month or $1,000 a year
  • Ultra at $200 a month or $2,000 a year

Prices exclude taxes. xAI's October 12, 2026 announcement says existing SuperGrok plans continue, and the App Store still lists SuperGrok purchases from $10 to $300 without billing periods.

The Grok FAQ says paid plans share one weekly usage pool, and extra usage credits start at $5. Under xAI's bundled subscription terms, payments are final and not refundable except where the law requires. If you paid through the App Store, refunds go through Apple instead.

Is Grok an adults-only app?

No. Grok's terms of service set the minimum age at 13, or higher where a country requires it, and users aged 13 to 17 need a parent or guardian's permission. The App Store rates the app 16+, listing frequent mature or suggestive themes and infrequent sexual content or nudity. Google Play rates it Teen. xAI's privacy policy says it collects your date of birth before you can use certain features, but it does not name those features.

Australia is the one place where the terms describe age checks. There, xAI uses age assurance measures, and until it can tell that a user is 18 or over, that user may not be able to reach 18+ adult content.

Dedicated companion apps start at 18. Nomi and Kindroid are rated 18+ on the App Store with age assurance, OurDream asks visitors to confirm they are 18 or over, and Candy's guidelines require 18 or the local legal age.

Grok AI NSFW rules: what xAI allows

xAI's terms say that, depending on the features you use, your settings and your prompts, Grok may reply with dialogue that involves coarse language, crude humor, sexual situations or violence. No xAI page sets adult content rules for companions specifically.

The acceptable use policy, effective August 14, 2026, is firm on what is banned. It forbids:

  • sexualizing or exploiting children
  • altering a real person's image or likeness to show them in an intimate or sexual way
  • using real people's likenesses in explicit material
  • deceptively impersonating a real person
  • jailbreaking, adversarial prompting or other attempts to get around its safeguards

xAI says it reports suspected child sexual abuse material to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. For apps built for adult roleplay between adult characters, see our guide to NSFW AI chat apps.

Grok AI girlfriend privacy and data controls reviewed on a laptop beside a phone chat and printed terms
Grok's data controls and terms decide what happens to your chats.

Does Grok use your chats to train its AI?

Yes, by default. xAI's consumer FAQ says it may use your content and interactions with Grok to train its models. It gives two ways to opt out:

  • In the app, open Settings, then Data Controls, and opt out under Improve the model.
  • On the web, open Settings, then Data, and opt out under Improve the Model.

The opt-out covers new conversations only, and feedback you give may still be used. Private Chat is not used for training and is deleted within 30 days. The same FAQ says a limited group of authorized staff may review conversations, including to improve the model, and that xAI does not sell your data. The App Store privacy labels list purchases, contact info, identifiers and usage data as data used to track you, and user content as data linked to you.

Candy's privacy policy also allows training on interactions, while Nomi's home page says chats are anonymized and not shared with third-party sites. Our guide to whether AI companion apps are safe goes deeper.

Grok companions vs dedicated AI girlfriend apps

Grok is a general assistant with companions added. The four apps below are built for adult companionship. Prices are in US dollars from each company's pricing page or App Store listing, read on November 1, 2026. For the full field, see our guide to the best AI girlfriend apps.

Kindroid$15.99 a month or $159.99 a year on the App StoreLong-term memory of past chatsSelfies, video selfies, voice and video calls; credits extraRated 18+ on the App Store, with age assurance

The case for Grok is narrow. If you already pay for Grok on an iPhone, check whether companions appear in your app before you pay for another one.

OurDream.ai: images, video and calls, paid in coins

OurDream's home page lists $19.99 a month or $119.88 a year, which works out to $9.99 a month. Subscribers send standard chat messages at no coin cost. Its help center says the monthly plan adds 1,000 coins at once and then 1,000 a month, while the yearly plan starts with 2,000. Coins pay for nearly everything visual:

  • Standard images cost 10 coins for 2, and images inside a chat cost 5 coins each.
  • Standard video costs 100 coins for every 5 seconds.
  • Voice calls cost 50 coins a minute.
  • The Genius chat models cost 1 coin per reply.

So 1,000 coins covers about 200 standard images, 50 seconds of standard video or 20 minutes of calls, not all three. The downsides are real. Free users pay a coin per message and cannot generate images or video, and you need an active subscription to buy more coins. Refunds stop once more than 25% of a product is used, monthly plans cannot be refunded once you spend coins, and yearly plans may get a full or partial refund. The home page claims end-to-end encryption that not even OurDream can read, while its privacy policy describes encryption at rest and in transit, which is not the same thing. Disputes go to individual arbitration unless you opt out within 30 days, and I found no App Store or Google Play link on its site. Our OurDream AI review covers it in full.

Candy.ai: detailed characters, paid in tokens

Candy's subscription page also lists $26.97 for three months, and every plan includes unlimited text messages and 100 tokens a month. Its help center says tokens pay for images, video, voice messages, voice calls and custom characters, so heavy image users run out fast. Our Candy AI review covers refunds and age checks.

Nomi: built around memory

Nomi's home page promises short, medium and long term memory, voice chats, hands-free calls and selfies, with a free start and no credit card. Its App Store listing adds a $39.99 quarterly plan and credit packs from $4.99. Pick Nomi if memory matters more to you than images.

Kindroid: you write the character

Kindroid's App Store listing lets you shape a character's personality, backstory and key memories, with voice calls, live video calls, selfies and video selfies. It also lists $42.99 for three months, higher Ultra and MAX tiers at $28.99 and $68.99, and separate selfie and audio credits. The pages I read set no adult content rules beyond the 18+ rating.

Verdict: is Grok a good AI girlfriend app?

Grok companions suit an adult who already pays for Grok on an iPhone and is curious about Ani. For anyone choosing an AI girlfriend app from scratch, Grok is a weak first pick. xAI does not say which plan includes companions, they run on iOS only, and the app accepts users from 13 with a 16+ App Store rating. Its pages set no rules for companions specifically, and your chats can train xAI's models unless you opt out. A dedicated app built for adults fits better. OurDream, which pays us a commission, costs $19.99 a month or $9.99 a month on the yearly plan and covers images, video and calls, but coins meter all three and refunds are tight. Nomi suits people who care most about memory. Kindroid suits people who want to write the character themselves. Candy suits detailed character builders who accept paying for images in tokens.

Try a dedicated app

If you want an AI girlfriend app built for adults, the Crushella home page lets you pick a look and a mood for your AI girlfriend, then continue to OurDream.ai to chat with her. Sign-up is free, and images and video need a subscription. To compare more options first, read our guide to the best AI girlfriend apps.

Frequently asked questions

Can Grok be your AI girlfriend?

Partly. Grok has companions, such as Ani, inside its iPhone app, and xAI's consumer FAQ says you can make Grok a companion by choosing a persona and tone. xAI does not sell Grok as a girlfriend app, does not say which plan includes companions, and accepts users from age 13. Dedicated apps such as Nomi or OurDream are built for adults.

What is Grok Ani?

Ani is one of the companion characters in the Grok app. A TechCrunch press report from July 14, 2025 described her as an anime-style character and said companions launched for SuperGrok subscribers. xAI itself publishes no description of Ani and no rules specific to her, and the App Store listing does not mention her. Companions run only in the iOS app.

How much do Grok companions cost?

xAI does not publish a price for companions. Its pricing page lists The X Subscription at free, $8, $30, $100 or $200 a month, before tax. A TechCrunch press report said companions launched in July 2025 for SuperGrok subscribers at $30 a month. Check inside the iOS app which plan includes them before you pay, because payments are generally final.

Are Grok companions available on Android or the web?

No. xAI's Grok FAQ says companions are available on the iOS app only, and that there are no plans to bring them to the web or Android. Grok itself runs on the web, iOS and Android, but companions do not. The App Store listing says the app needs iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later.

Does Grok allow NSFW content?

xAI's terms say that, depending on features, settings and prompts, Grok may reply with dialogue involving coarse language, sexual situations or violence. Its acceptable use policy bans sexualizing children, altering images of real people to show them in a sexual way, and jailbreaking. In Australia, xAI uses age assurance and may block 18+ adult content until it confirms a user is an adult.

How old do you have to be to use Grok companions?

Grok's terms set the minimum age at 13, or higher where local law requires, and users aged 13 to 17 need a parent's permission. The App Store rates Grok 16+ and Google Play rates it Teen. xAI collects a date of birth before some features but does not say which. Dedicated companion apps such as Nomi and Kindroid are rated 18+.

Does Grok use my chats to train its AI?

Yes, unless you opt out. xAI's consumer FAQ says it may use your content and interactions to train its models. In the app, the setting is Improve the model under Data Controls. Opting out covers new chats only, and feedback may still be used. Private Chat is not used for training and is deleted within 30 days.
